What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is a form of online shopping in which an AI agent handles part of the purchase for a person: it finds products, compares brands and merchants, and can complete checkout. It runs on open protocols such as OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) and Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).

Why agentic commerce matters: agents compare brands for you

Google describes agentic commerce as commerce "where AI completes tasks on people's behalf." For brands, the task that matters most is the comparison. In ChatGPT, OpenAI says product results are "organic and unsponsored, ranked purely on relevance to the user." When several merchants sell the same product, ChatGPT "considers factors like availability, price, quality, whether a merchant is the primary seller, and whether Instant Checkout is enabled."

The shopper sees the agent's shortlist, not the whole market. A brand that is missing from that shortlist is never compared at all, however good its product page is.

How agentic commerce works

  • Product data feeds the agent. OpenAI now presents ACP as the layer that lets ChatGPT "ingest structured catalog data, understand merchant inventory, and surface relevant products in context." Google is adding Merchant Center attributes for conversational shopping, such as answers to common product questions, compatible accessories and substitutes.
  • The agent compares. It ranks products and merchants against the shopper's criteria: price, availability, specs, reviews.
  • Checkout runs through a protocol. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout with ACP and Stripe in September 2025, starting with U.S. Etsy sellers. Google launched UCP in January 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, to power checkout in AI Mode and the Gemini app. In both cases, the retailer stays the seller of record.
  • Carts work in the background. Google's Universal Cart, launched in the U.S. on October 15, 2026, saves items from several stores, tracks price drops and checks out through UCP.

Example: a standing desk bought through an agent

A shopper asks Google AI Mode: "I need a standing desk under $600 that fits a 120 cm alcove and can be delivered before Friday." The agent filters desks by width, price and delivery date, compares a few across retailers, and may offer checkout with Google Pay where the retailer supports UCP. A brand whose product data leaves out the desk's exact width can drop out at the filtering step, before any human compares anything.

How to track your brand against competitors in agent answers

Agentic shopping happens inside the same assistants that answer everyday shopping questions, so the competitive set forms there first. Keep product data complete in Merchant Center, which Google says helps products show up in AI responses, and in ChatGPT's product feed if you sell there. Then watch who gets recommended: Hawkscan ranks every brand you track, yours included, by visibility score, mention rate and average position across ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode. A positioning map sorts them into Leaders, Niche, Challengers and Discreet. Hawkscan does not track purchases made by agents. For the research side of the journey, see agentic search.
