AI referral traffic

AI referral traffic is the website traffic that comes from links in AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Claude. Analytics tools recognize it from the referrer or from a tag such as utm_source=chatgpt.com, and Google Analytics 4 groups recognized visits in an AI Assistant channel.

Why AI referral traffic matters

AI referral traffic is the part of AI visibility that shows up in your analytics, and it is small compared with how much AI systems read. Cloudflare compares the pages each platform's bots crawl with the visits it sends back. In July 2025, OpenAI crawled about 1,091 pages for every visit it referred, and Anthropic about 38,000. The visits that do arrive come from people who read an answer and chose to learn more, which is why they deserve their own line in your reports instead of hiding in Referral.

How to spot AI referral traffic in analytics

  • Google Analytics 4. Since May 13, 2026, GA4 has an AI Assistant default channel. It sets the medium to "ai-assistant" when the referrer matches a recognized assistant, from sources "like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok."
  • The ChatGPT tag. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links. According to Adobe's Cedric Huesler, referral information is still missing from most ChatGPT clicks, which makes this tag an important attribution signal.
  • Google's own AI features. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are not AI referrals in GA4: they count as Organic Search, and Search Console reports them within the "Web" search type.
  • Other assistants. Build a custom channel group for the referrers your audience actually uses.

Dark traffic: the AI visits you can't see

Dark traffic is the visits whose real source is lost, so analytics files them as Direct. AI referrals are especially exposed, because they depend on a tag or a referrer that the assistant controls, and either can disappear without notice. In October 2026, a ChatGPT bug briefly removed the tag from its links, and the visits it sent showed up as Direct until a fix rolled out. A reader who copies a link from an answer, or who searches your name after reading one, also shows up as Direct or as a branded search, never as AI. Your real AI referral traffic is therefore larger than the AI Assistant channel shows.

How to measure AI referral traffic

  • Annotate tracking breaks, such as a tag lost after an assistant update, so they aren't read as a fall in demand.
  • Watch Direct traffic on the pages AI assistants cite: a jump there may be untagged AI visits.
  • Add "AI assistant" to the answers of your "How did you hear about us?" field.

Analytics shows the visits, not the answers behind them. Hawkscan doesn't measure traffic, but it lists the pages AI engines cite in the answers of ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Mode, with the number of answers that cite each one. Compare that list with your top AI landing pages.
