Brand mention
A brand mention is a reference to a brand by name in content the brand does not control, such as a news article, a review, a forum thread or an answer from ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Google AI Mode. A mention can come with a link or without one; in AI search, it means the assistant names the brand.
Why brand mentions matter in AI search
Brand mentions matter twice in AI search: mentions on the web feed the models, and a mention in the answer is what the buyer sees. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found that branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with how often a brand appears in Google's AI Overviews (0.664 on the Spearman scale), far ahead of backlinks (0.218). Brands in the top quarter for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions, over ten times more than the next quarter, which averaged 14. And 26% of the brands studied had no AI Overview mention at all.
Ahrefs is careful to say that correlation is not causation. Still, the pattern fits how language models work: they learn and retrieve from text, so a brand that many pages talk about is a brand they can name.
How brand mentions work, from the web to the answer
A brand mention takes two forms on the web. A linked mention includes a hyperlink to your site; an unlinked mention names you in plain text. Classic SEO valued the link. AI search also reads the words around it.
A web mention can reach an AI answer by two routes:
- Training. The model learns which brands are associated with which needs from the text it was trained on.
- Retrieval. The engine searches the web while answering and reads the pages it finds. Google says its generative AI features "can show what's being said about products and services across the web, including in blogs, videos, and forum discussions."
Not every mention weighs the same. Chen et al. found that AI search leans heavily on earned media, meaning independent reviews, publishers and institutions. For consumer electronics queries in the United States, earned media made up 92.1% of the domains cited by OpenAI's search-enabled GPT-4o, with almost no social platforms.
Inside an AI answer, a mention is simpler: the assistant writes your brand's name. Tracking tools detect it in the text and note its position, meaning the order in which brands are first named.
Example: one prompt, three brand mentions
Take a prompt an office manager might type into an AI assistant:
Which password manager should a 20-person accounting firm use?
Imagine the answer names three fictional brands. It recommends Vaultly first for its admin controls. It names KeyNest as a cheaper alternative with fewer features. And it mentions PassHarbor only to warn that it had outages last year.
All three brands are mentioned. A metric that counts mentions treats them the same way, yet only Vaultly won the recommendation. KeyNest is a fallback, and PassHarbor is a cautionary example. The answer also cites a comparison page from a review site and PassHarbor's own status page, so the brand with the worst mention is the only one whose site is cited.
Mention vs recommendation
Being named is not the same as being recommended. An AI answer can mention a brand as the top pick, as a budget alternative, as a reference point for a rival, or as a brand to avoid. Mention counts and mention rates record presence, not the role the brand plays.
That gap is why the Harvard Business Review article on "Share of Model" looks beyond mention rate and adds a separate lens for "brand and category sentiment". In practice, the only reliable way to know whether a mention is a recommendation is to read the answer. Look for three signals: whether your brand is the first one suggested, whether the reasons given match your real strengths, and whether the facts are current.

Brand mention vs citation vs backlink
A brand mention, an AI citation and a backlink are easy to mix up, because they often appear together.
| Brand mention | AI citation | Backlink | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Your brand's name in a text | A link to a page shown as a source of an AI answer | A hyperlink from one web page to another |
| Needs a link | No | Yes | Yes |
| Where you see it | Web pages and AI answers | AI answers | Web pages |
| Can exist without the others | Yes, named but no page of yours cited | Yes, your page cited but your brand not named | Yes, linked from a page AI never uses |
An AI citation points to a page, while a mention names a brand. The two often diverge: an engine can cite a review that praises your competitor, and name you without citing any of your pages.
How to measure and earn brand mentions
Measure brand mentions in AI answers by running the prompts your buyers ask, repeatedly, and recording which brands each answer names. The usual summary is the mention rate: answers that name you divided by all answers. Compare it with your competitors on the same prompts, and with your AI visibility score, which adds position to presence.
Hawkscan detects your brand in every answer from ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and shows your mention rate per engine, per prompt and over time, along with the prompts where AI leaves you out.
To earn more mentions, work on what the engines read: coverage in independent reviews, comparisons and trade publications that rank for your category's questions, and real customer discussions. Avoid shortcuts. Google warns that "seeking inauthentic 'mentions' across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem", because its generative features rely on the same systems that rank quality content and block spam.
Common questions
What is an unlinked brand mention?
An unlinked brand mention is a page that names your brand without linking to your site. Ahrefs' Ryan Law argues that unlinked mentions "have very little impact on SEO, but a much bigger impact on GEO", because models read the words on the page. In the Ahrefs study, branded web mentions, linked or unlinked, showed the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility.
Are brand mentions a ranking factor?
Not in a proven, direct way. The Ahrefs results are correlations, and Google's guidance stresses quality content and warns against seeking inauthentic mentions. What is clear is that AI engines retrieve and summarize what the web says about brands, so being discussed on pages that rank gives assistants material to name you.
How do I find out if ChatGPT mentions my brand?
Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, without naming your brand, and check whether it appears. One answer is not enough, because the list of brands changes from one run to the next. Run each prompt several times, on several engines, and count how often your brand is named.
