Citation rate

Citation rate is an AI search metric that measures how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Google AI Mode cite a website as a source. It is the share of checked answers that link to at least one page of the site, over a set of prompts and a period.

Why citation rate matters

A citation is the link an AI answer shows as its source, and it is the main way the answer can send a reader to your site. For a brand's own pages, being cited is harder than it looks. In a 2025 study run through the engines' APIs, Chen and colleagues asked ranking-style questions about well-known brands: 93.5% of the sources ChatGPT cited were earned media, such as third-party reviews and articles, against 6.5% brand-owned sites. Gemini was more balanced, with 25.1% brand-owned sources. A low citation rate on your own domain is therefore common, and worth tracking engine by engine.

How citation rate works

Citation rate works at the level of answers, like the mention rate, but it reads the sources instead of the text.

  1. Run your tracked prompts on each engine, repeatedly.
  2. Collect the links each answer cites.
  3. Mark the answers that cite at least one page from your domain.
  4. Divide those answers by all the answers checked.

Engines that search the web cite the pages they retrieved, often through several sub-queries (see query fan-out). An answer written from the model's memory alone may cite nothing, and it counts as an answer without your citation.

Formula

Citation rate = answers that cite your domain ÷ answers checked × 100

Worked example (fictional values). Over a month, 200 answers are checked for a set of accounting prompts. 30 of them link to at least one page on the brand's domain, so the citation rate is 30 ÷ 200 = 15%. Counting answers rather than links stops one answer that cites five of your pages from weighing five times.

Citation rate vs citation share

Citation share answers a different question: of all the citations shown, how many are yours? Microsoft's Bing Webmaster Tools defines it as "the percentage of citations attributed to your site out of all citations shown for a specific grounding query."

A brand can have a high citation rate and a low citation share when every answer cites many sources.

How to improve citation rate

Start with the pages the engines already cite for your prompts: they show which sites and formats each engine trusts. Hawkscan lists the pages cited in the answers of ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Mode, with the number of answers that cite each page, its average position among the cited pages and whether it mentions your brand. It also shows the 8 most cited domains, with yours highlighted. Then strengthen the pages that rank for the questions behind your prompts, and earn a place on the third-party pages the engines keep citing.
