AEO vs SEO: what's the difference?

AEO vs SEO compares two ways of earning search visibility. SEO (search engine optimization) aims to rank pages in Google and Bing results. AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to get a brand named and cited inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Google AI Mode. AEO builds on SEO.

What AEO and SEO share

AEO and SEO share their foundations, because AI answers are built on search. Google says its generative AI features "are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems", so the best practices for SEO still apply. Microsoft says the same about Copilot: crawlability, metadata, internal linking and backlinks "remain essential."

Both disciplines also need the same technical access. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in Google's AI features, and OpenAI asks sites to allow its OAI-SearchBot crawler to be eligible for ChatGPT search results. A page that search engines cannot crawl is invisible to SEO and AEO alike.

Where AEO and SEO differ

AEO and SEO differ in what counts as a win. In SEO, a page wins a position on a results page and earns a click. In AEO, a brand wins a mention inside an answer, often without any click: in Pew Research Center's March 2025 data, Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one.

They also differ in what gets ranked. Microsoft explains that in AI search "ranking still happens, but it's less about ordering entire pages and more about which pieces of content earn a place in the final answer." And the competition is wider than the query itself. With query fan-out, engines run many sub-queries behind each prompt. Ahrefs found that only 37.9% of the URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the top 10 for the query itself, down from about 76% in July 2025.

Finally, the output is unstable. A results page changes slowly, while an AI assistant writes a new answer every time, with brands that come and go from one run to the next. One check proves little; trends over many runs do.

Do you need both AEO and SEO?

Yes, and in that order. SEO remains the entry ticket for AEO: the pages AI engines retrieve are pages that rank, for the main query or for its sub-queries. Google goes further and tells site owners that, for its own AI features, they can ignore "AEO/GEO hacks" such as special AI text files or chunking content into tiny pieces.

AEO adds what SEO does not cover: knowing which prompts matter, which brands the engines recommend instead of yours, and which third-party pages they cite. That knowledge changes your priorities. A review site that ranks for a sub-query may be worth more than another blog post on your own domain.

For most brands, AEO is not a separate team or budget. It is SEO with a second scoreboard: the answers themselves.

How to measure AEO and SEO

Measuring SEO and AEO calls for different tools, because one counts clicks and the other counts mentions.

  • SEO: rankings, impressions and clicks in Search Console, plus organic sessions and conversions in your analytics. Google also offers a Generative AI performance report in Search Console for its own AI features.
  • AEO: run the prompts your buyers ask on each AI assistant, repeatedly, and record whether your brand is named, in which position and next to which competitors. Summarize the result with a mention rate and an AI visibility score, and track the pages each engine cites.

Hawkscan runs your prompts every day on ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode, and shows the full answers, the brands they name and the sources they cite.

Common questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO depends on SEO, because AI engines retrieve the pages that search engines rank. What changes is the scoreboard: a ranking that no longer earns a click can still earn a mention in the answer, and a brand that ranks well can still be left out of it.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

AEO and GEO (generative engine optimization) describe the same goal, being visible in AI-generated answers, and are often used as synonyms. AEO comes from the older idea of answer engines and featured snippets, GEO from a 2023 research paper on generative engines.

How long does AEO take to show results?

AEO has no fixed timeline. Engines that search the web, such as ChatGPT search or Google AI Mode, can cite a page as soon as they retrieve it, while what a model learned in training only changes with a new model version. Because answers vary from run to run, judge progress on the trend of your mention rate over several weeks, not on a single answer.
