Citation gap

A citation gap is the set of pages that AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Google AI Mode cite in answers about your market and that mention your competitors but not your brand. Closing it means getting covered on those pages or giving the engines a better source.

Why citation gaps matter

AI engines build their answers from the pages they cite, and most of those pages are not yours. In a 2025 study, Chen and colleagues found that AI search shows "a systematic and overwhelming bias towards Earned media (third-party, authoritative sources) over Brand-owned and Social content". For ranking-style questions about niche brands, 95.1% of the sources ChatGPT cited were earned media. When a cited review or comparison lists three competitors and leaves you out, the engine has little to say about you, whatever your own site claims. Each page in the gap is a concrete, fixable reason for a missing mention.

How to find a citation gap

Official tools stop short of the gap. Bing Webmaster Tools reports a Citation Share for your site, but it "does not expose competitor domain names or identify which other sites hold the remaining share." You have to build the list yourself:

  1. Collect the cited pages for the prompts you track, on each engine.
  2. Check each page for your brand and for each competitor.
  3. Keep the pages that name competitors and not you. That list is the gap.
  4. Rank it by the number of answers that cite each page.
  5. Sort it by type: comparison articles, review sites, forum threads, directories. Each type needs a different fix.

Example: a gap in practice

Here is an illustrative case. A booking app for hair salons tracks the prompt "What's the best booking app for a two-chair hair salon?" Over a month, the engines keep citing three pages: a "best salon booking software" article that reviews four competitors, a Reddit thread where salon owners compare apps, and a competitor's pricing page. The app appears on none of them. The article comes first, because it is cited most: the team sends its editor up-to-date facts and a test account. The thread comes second, through honest replies from real customers.

How to close a citation gap

  • Help editors update the pages that list your category. Send facts, prices and screenshots, not ad copy.
  • Earn reviews and discussions on the sites the engines cite, from real customers only.
  • Publish the source the engines lack, such as an honest comparison page, and make it rank for the questions behind your prompts.

Hawkscan lists every page the engines cite in the answers of ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Mode, with the number of answers citing it and whether it mentions your brand. Its action plan also flags the pages that cite your competitors but not you. Track your citation rate and mention rate to see the gap close.
